PAPILLION, NE — Beatrice pitchers Tucker Timmerman and Adam DeBoer worked around trouble to hold back the Omaha Skutt offense and beat the Skyhawks 4-3 Tuesday night.
Timmerman fanned 12 batters over six innings and allowed just two runs on seven hits. The sophomore earned the win by subduing an offense that pushed across 20 runs in the first two games of the tournament. DeBoer, a junior, collected the save by striking out the final two batters.
Beatrice snuck into the tournament as the #8 seed and has dispatched of the one, five and three seeds to become the lone undefeated team in Class B. The Orangemen will play #2 Norris Wednesday morning at 10:00. If Beatrice wins, it will have two chances to beat the winner of Ralston vs. Skutt for the state title. If the team loses, they would play the winner of Norris vs. the Ralston/Skutt winner for the state title.
For the third time this tournament, the Orangemen scored the first run of the game. Will Reimer walked to start the contest. Two batters later, he came home on an RBI groundout by DeBoer to grab the lead.
Timmerman punched out five of the first seven batters but ran into trouble in the third. Skutt racked up four straight hits, including a two-RBI double by Cade Barton, to grab a 2-1 advantage. After a mound visit, the future Husker regained composure to retire the next three batters and limit the damage.
Beatrice retook the lead in the fifth. Caleb Jobman singled and a courtesy runner moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Jaxson Blackburn singled him home to tie the game. Two batters later, Max Reis smoked a triple to drive in the go-ahead run. Reis came home on a botched pickoff move to make it 4-2.
The lead stayed there until the bottom of the seventh. DeBoer came on to relieve Timmerman and allowed a triple and single to start the inning and make it a one-run game. Skutt worked a sac bunt and a walk in the next two batters to put the game-winning run on base. After another mound visit, DeBoer found his stuff and struck out the final two Skyhawks to get the save.
