OMAHA, Neb- It’s not often that athletes spend months training and days waiting, just for eight seconds of fame—but that’s the case for professional bull rider Chase Dougherty.

Dougherty, and many other riders, will be in Omaha this weekend for the first time since 2012 for Unleash the Beast.

The process for which bovine beast Dougherty will try to get the best of this weekend is completely up to chance.

“Normally, they let us know a day or two in advance on which ones we are going to be getting on,” Dougherty said. “But it is computer generated, so it is completely random.”

Dougherty also says that, depending on where the bulls are, the riders have a chance to meet the bucking beast face to face before squaring off moments later.

“You have that opportunity sometimes,” Dougherty said. “Sometimes, just because of where the bulls are at, you don’t always have that opportunity. I’m the kind of rider that I’m not going to go back there and see the bull until he’s in the buck and shoot.”

Although there are far more differences than similarities between rider and ridee, one thing that they both have in common is the distance traveled for the event. According to PBR contractor Justin Cornwell, the drive from Lima, Ohio is something these bulls look forward to.

“It’s right at about twelve hours for me,” Cornwell said. “So, I’ll drive straight through, but we try not to keep them on the trailer much more than twelve hours. They (bulls) know the routine. Those bulls, when they see you hooking up the trailer they literally come up to the gates and are ready to come on. I mean, they enjoy this.”

Dougherty and the bulls seem to agree on another thing this weekend.
