SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. (KNEP) - Recently the Nebraska Advisory Committee to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights recommends legislation to phase out Native American mascots they deem as offensive. But no legislation has gone into effect.

Tim Cody Superintendent for Minatare Public Schools said about 17 schools have a Native American names whether it is Warriors or Indians could be affected. He was born on an Indian reservation adopted by the Assiniboin tribe and understands their perspective.

“We’re changing the logo a little bit you no longer see the MHS the Indian and war bonnet you see an M for Minatare,” said Cody. “There are some things that we’ve done to prepare for this and we know it’s on the radar.”

“I’ve grown up around Native Americans all my life,” said Cody. “I’ve been accepted as a brother to them I understand that viewpoint.”

“There is a lot of local history in the community here,” said Cody. “A lot of older people are not going to want to give up that symbolism because it means something to them. But like I said it’s a two sided coin.”

“Minatare actually came from the Minatare Indians there is such a tribe,” said Cody. “Same with the Ogallala the Ogallala Sioux if any community should be allowed to have the Indians you think it would be those two communities.”

“I also understand the perspective of not so much racist but the symbolism of war bonnets and spears and arrows those sort of things,” said Cody. “There is a history attached to that as well and it’s not always been good. Is there a right or wrong? I don’t think so.”
