NORFOLK, Neb. - Skaters with a cause collecting essentials for the homeless.

"We're going to gather as many kids from here as possible and give them the opportunity to give back in Lincoln," said Bryce Schmitz owner of Wisper Skate Shop in Norfolk. "Once we get there we're going to meet up with the Lincoln guys, get the group together and skate around downtown handing out care packages."

Schmitz says the idea came from an indoor skate park owner Mike Smith in Lincoln.

"The Bay's been doing this for years and we figured let's get involved and bring the opportunity to the young kids in our community," Schmitz said. "Give them the opportunity to give back.

Although the program is meant to help others, it's also rewarding for the skaters themselves.

"Skateboarding is amazing," Schmitz said. "It builds that relentlessness in you. You try something over and over and over again until you finally get it. As a kid, I never realized how much it impacted my life today."

Just two weeks into the care package program, Schmitz said he's already seen a ton of supplies.

"Our main focus this year is to give back as much as possible and be a part of something that's much bigger than us," Schmitz said. "With how strong our community is, I feel like we're going to make a big impact this year."

The shop is hoping to collect as many necessities as possible before the kids take the skate trip to Lincoln.
