LINCOLN, Neb.  - Authorities in Nebraska's capital city are warning community members about a possible suspect impersonating law enforcement officers.

The Lincoln Police Department said that officers were called to a home near 14th and F Streets after the residents suspected someone might be impersonating a police official Wednesday afternoon.

LPD said they spoke with a 20-year-old woman who explained that a man she did not know arrived at the home and asked for her by name. According to police, the man identified himself as a police officer.

LPD said when the man was questioned about his identity, he left the home.

Officers could not find any evidence of a police officer or plain clothes investigator working in that area at the time of the incident.

Uniformed LPD officers will display an official LPD police badge on their uniform, as well as an official LPD patch on their shoulder sleeves. Plain clothes LPD investigators will present their official police badge when making contact with someone.

LPD said officers and investigators should identify themselves when contacting residents, and if requested, should also readily provide their badge number and business card.

If you are unsure about whether an individual contacting you, either in person or by phone, is an actual LPD officer, you can call (402) 441-6000 for verification.
