KIMBALL, NE — From the street, to the sidewalks and even some rooftops, it’s all hands on deck in Kimball.

"The game plan is to get all the arteries open, get everything pushed to the middle and get traffic going," Kimball mayor Keith Prunty said. "Hopefully in the next day or two we can start loading up all the loaders and trucks and find a place to put all this snow.

Prunty says all street crew workers and all their equipment are out Monday to clear the town's roads of the foot-and-a-half of snow received over the weekend. Crews worked Saturday and Sunday to keep emergency routes clear.

"We do get calls for emergencies," Prunty said. "I think we had one where someone's expecting a birth any minute so we sent the loaders and a truck up and got all the roads clear for them."

The city’s power crews were put to the test as well. Heavy wet snow caused tree branches to fall on power lines in town. Prunty says some in Kimball's Electric Department put in 14-16 hour days to help keep the lights on.

"We've been helping get all that repaired and get power back on because some are on oxygen or have medical needs," Prunty said. "We take care of them first. The brunt of it is over for right now."

One silver lining is the amount of moisture received with the storm. Kimball and much of the Panhandle have been in a drought since last Summer. They’re hopeful this storm will turn the tide.

"I think our farmers are doing the happy rain dance," Prunty said. "They probably can't get out of their houses for awhile but at least there's moisture for the crops when this all does melt. I think we'll see a nice good, green, blooming Spring. That's what we're all looking forward to.

City crews are hard at work, but Prunty says it will take plenty of time to get all the roads cleared.

"We're going to be pushed to the max, that's for sure," he said. "We'll do the best we can and all I ask from our community is please be patient. We will get through this. We will get it cleared. We just haven't seen this much snow this quick for a long time. Our guys are working their hardest so just show some respect to them."
