Chadron State College has another All-American long jumper.

Friday afternoon in at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships in Birmingham, Alabama, Chadron State sophomore Naishaun Jernigan placed eighth in the men’s long jump by going 7.27 meters, or 23 feet, 10 ¼ inches.

It’s the sixth time a Chadron State male athlete has earned All-American honors in the long jump indoors. While his jump was not as far as his previous best of 24-3 this winter, Eagles’ Coach Riley Northrup noted that only the top three finishers had marks exceeding their season bests entering the national competition.

The long jump winner was Kizan David of Lincoln University in Missouri of 25-1 ¾. Second place went to Dashaun Morgan of Montevillo University in Alabama at 24-11 ¾ and third was Chris Goodwin of Central Missouri at 24-10. All three are seniors.

Finishing fourth was Joe Oreva Eafiadhe, a freshman from of Carson-Newman in Tennessee at 24-5 ¾. He was leading Division II with a mark of 25-8 ¾ entering the national meet.

Fifth was Glenn Butler of Lincoln University of Pennsylvania at 24-5 ½, followed by Christian Davis of Concordia-St. Paul at 24-1 ½ and Peter Ackah of the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs at 23-10 ¾, just a half inch farther than Jernigan jumped.

A year ago, Jernigan qualified for the National Indoor Championships in the triple jump, but the meet was cancelled by the COVID Pandemic just 24 hours before the competition was to begin. Coach Northrup said he is confident Jernigan, a native of Springfield, Mass., will someday place in both the long and triple jumps at a national meet.

“It could happen this outdoor season,” Northrup said. “Naishaun has lots of talent.”

Particularly since 2015, Chadron State has been strong in the long jump. Damarcus Simpson won the silver medals indoors and the gold medals outdoors at the national meets in both 2015 and 2016. Isaac Grimes was the indoor champion and the outdoor silver medalist both in 2019

In addition, Chadron State women have placed in the long jump at national meets a dozen times, led by Stacia Reuwsaat, a native of Rapid City, who was the gold medalist indoors in both 2016 and 2017 and the silver medalist outdoors in 2016.

CSC Outscored 26-4 In Dropping Twin Bill At Colorado Christian

The Chadron State College softball team lost twice on Friday, by 12-3 and 14-1 margins, at Colorado Christian University in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play.

Both games were over in five innings.

Chadron State scored all three of its runs in the first inning, continuing to gain an early lead as it did in the first two games on Thursday.

From there it was all downhill for the Eagles. CCU gained a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the second when center fielder Sami Edwards hit a two-RBI single to provide the tying and winning runs. What followed was an eight-run third inning in which the Cougars walked four times, hit safely three times, and benefited from two errors.

CSC went through three pitchers, and starter Gabby Russell re-entered for the final inning and a third. Tia Kohl, who was in the game during Edwards’ scoring shot, fell to 1-6 in the loss.

CCU’s Jennifer Romero improved to 4-2 in the circle, pitching a complete game.

In the latter game, CSC did not score until the fourth inning, after falling behind 14-0 over the first three.

Cougars pitcher Julie Katz held the Eagles to three hits, all leading off innings, including the solo home run in the fourth by CSC shortstop Bailey Marvel that ruined the shutout.

Colorado Christian scored five in the first inning, four in the second, and five more in the third. The Cougars’ highlight was a three-run homer by designated player Piper Lujan with one out in the second.

CSC freshman Caitlyn Lotspeich received her first appearance of the season, as well as her first loss.

Katz pitched the complete game for CCU to get to 3-0 on the season.

Chadron State is now 4-13 (4-8 RMAC), while Colorado Christian improves to 8-4 (7-1 RMAC).

The Eagles are back at home next weekend, pending weather and field conditions, March 20-21 hosting Regis University.
