The Chadron State College women’s volleyball was unsuccessful against Regis University on Friday, losing three straight sets, 14-25, 14-25, 16-25 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.

The Eagles are now 2-4 (1-2 RMAC) on the 2020 season, while Regis improves to 5-2 (5-1 RMAC).

The Rangers were led to victory over the Eagles with three players earning double-digits. Halle Theis and Ayala Plummer had 11 kills and Rachel Suirek had 10. Mara LeGrand had 42 assists, the most on her team.

Haley Kennedy of Regis had 14 digs and played in all three sets.

Junior setter Breshawna Kelly had a hitting percentage of .667 while also getting the most assists of her teammates with 11.

Lexi Hurtado with 11 digs was followed by Karli Noble with 8 to lead their team with 19 of the Eagles’ 33 digs in the three sets.

In total, the Rangers out attacked the Eagles 98-87, hitting .388 compared to CSC’s .023.

The Eagles will head on the road for the rest of the season, playing nine matches before the RMAC Championships in April. The next match will be played against Western Colorado University on Monday, Mar. 1 at noon in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Metro Pulls Away From Eagles 80-64

The Chadron State College men’s basketball team battled Metro State tooth and nail for the first 25 minutes of their Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference clash in Denver on Friday night, before the Roadrunners went on a 19-0 run en route to winning 80-64.

Metro led 32-30 at halftime, but the Eagles took the lead twice early in the second half before the Roadrunners switched to a 2-2-1 zone that stalled the CSC offense. Meanwhile, the home team shot the lights out to break the game open. The hosts hit 75 percent from the field during the first 11 minutes of the second half while going ahead 58-38.

Chadron State finally scored for the first time in over five minutes with 10:15 to play and got the difference down to 11 points–60-49–with 7:30 left, but the damage had been done.

Now 9-6 for the season and the winner of their last five games, the Roadrunners were led in scoring by 5-11 freshman Kobe Sanders, who hit six 3-pointers for the third time in four games this month and finished with 24 points.

Another big weapon was 6-8 sophomore Laolu Oke, who scored 15 points on seven of nine shooting from the field and grabbed 16 rebounds, 11 of them offensive.

The Eagles were led by 6-3 senior Brady Delimont of Ainsworth, who tallied a career-high 22 points while shooting seven of 11 from the field, including five of eight on 3-pointers, and making all three of his free throws.

Psalm Maduakor contributed 12 points while going three of four on threes for CSC.

Overall, Metro was 31 of 59 from the field for 52.5 percent while the Eagles were 22 of 51 for 43.1 percent. Both teams sank 11 treys.

The Eagles will wrap up their regular season schedule tonight (Saturday) by playing at Colorado Christian. The Cougars, who were just 3-14 for the season, upset Black Hills State on Friday night 87-82.

Chadron State is now 5-6 for the season. It’s uncertain where the Eagles will be seeded for the RMAC playoffs, which are this coming week, if they win tonight, but their current ranking of fourth in the conference RPI is up for grabs if they lose.

Lady Eagles Fall To Roadrunners

The Chadron State College women’s basketball team was unable to pick up their first win of the season on Friday against Metropolitan State University of Denver.

The Eagles lost to the Roadrunners 79-57 and are now 0-12 on the season. MSU Denver improved to 11-5, with a 10-4 mark in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play.

After just over three minutes without a score, MSUD took the lead and controlled it the rest of the night.

The Roadrunners were dominant in nearly every statistical category. Maggie Justinak with 16 points, Allie Navarette with 15 points, and Morgan Lewis combined to earn 44 of their team’s 79 points.

Defensively, MSUD had 28 rebounds with 13 of them being shared between Navarette and Lewis.

As a team, the Roadrunners averaged 50% on field goals, scoring 31 of 62 attempts. The Eagles, at 23 of 68 attempts, averaged 33.8%.

Tatum Peterson had another double-digit scoring night as she led her team in scoring with 12 points. She went 5-16 for field goals and two for two on free throws.

Taryn Foxen only played 25 minutes after fouling out in the third quarter. She, along with Ashayla Powers and Bailey Brooks, earned 10 points on the night.

The women’s team will play their last game of the season on the road at Colorado Christian on Saturday, Feb. 27 at 5 p.m.

Long Jump Good Event For CSC Men At RMAC Indoor Meet

As projected, the long jump proved to be an strong event for the Chadron State College men on Saturday during the second day of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Indoor Championships at Black Hills State in Spearfish.

The Eagles collected 17 points in the long jump, where three Eagles placed. Sophomore Naishaun Jernigan of Springfield, Mass., was second at 24 feet, 3 inches while freshmen Emory Yoosook of Casper and Morgan Fawver of McCook were fourth and fifth, respectively, with marks of 23-2 ¾ and 23-1 ¾.

Jernigan’s jump was a career best by seven inches, Yoosook’s mark was his best by a foot and Fawver matched his all-time best.

Fawver also qualified for the finals of the 200-meter dash on Sunday with a time of 22.09, his career best and good for fourth in the preliminaries. He’ll also be among the favorites in the 60-meter finals after posting the second fasted time of 6.86 second in that preliminary race Friday.

The Eagles, who through nine events are fourth in the men’s team standings with 30.5 points, picked up 10 points in the heptathlon where both of their entries moved up in the placings on Saturday by finishing strong in the grueling event.

Sophomore Pete Brown of Oxford, Neb., finished third with 4,464 points after being fourth in the standings the day before, and freshman Dylan Soule of Polk, Neb., climbed two spots to place fifth with 3,907 points.

The Eagles’ Alec Penfield of Lusk, Wyo., also earned points by tying for fifth and sixth in the high jump by clearing 6-4 ¾.

In the women’s competition Saturday, two Lady Eagles placed in both the shot put and the high jump.

Freshman Morgan Ekwall of Yoder, Wyo., was seventh in the shot while matching her career-best of 39-3 ¼ and sophomore Becca Monahan of Cheyenne was eighth at 39-2 ½, four inches farther than her previous best.

Both sophomore Miranda Gilkey of Lusk and Destiny Pelton of Fort Morgan, Colo., went 5 feet and half inch in high jump while placing sixth and tying for eighth, respectively, in the standings.

CSC Sprinters Shine In RMAC Championship Prelims

Two Chadron State College sprinters, Morgan Fawver and Osvaldo Cano, had the second fastest times in their races during the preliminaries as the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Indoor Championships got underway at Black Hills State in Spearfish on Friday.

Fawver, a freshman from McCook, ran the 60 meters in 6.86 seconds. The only faster time was posted by Bryce Lucas of Western Colorado in 6.82 seconds. They were not in the same heat, but will run side-by-side in the middle of the pack during the 60 finals on Sunday.

Cano, a sophomore from Oshkosh, had a career-best time 49.98 seconds to be the runner-up in the 400-meter prelims. The fastest time of 49.12 was by Jonah Vigil of Adams State, who finished second in both the preliminaries and the finals of the 400 at last year’s RMAC Championships to the Eagles’ Brodie Roden

Roden also has the best time in the conference in the 400 again this season, but is not competing at the championships because of a pulled hamstring.

Cano’s twin, Osiel, also had a career-best of 51.67 seconds in the 400 preliminaries Friday, but missed being among the eight qualifiers in Sunday’s finals by one place.

All of Chadron State’s other action Friday was in the multi-events. The Lady Eagles earned three points when freshman Hannah Christie of Alpine, Wyo., finished seventh and junior Julieanne Thomsen of Custer, S.D. was eighth in the pentathlon.

Christie scored 3,089 points and Thomsen 3,050.

CSC Coach Riley Northrup was happy that Christie high jumped 5-4 ½, the best mark among the dozen contestants and two inches higher than she’d cleared before. The coach added that if Christie can duplicate that effort during the regular high jump competition Saturday she should place high.

On the other side of the coin, Northrup said Christie lost about 100 points in the long jump because she took off about a foot behind the board during her best attempt.

In the men’s heptathlon, sophomore Pete Brown of Oxford, Neb., did well. He had personal bests in all four of the events on Friday and is fourth in the standings with 2,504 points. Brown ran the 60 dash in 7.80 seconds, long jumped 19-5 ¾, threw the shot 38-1 ¾ and high jumped 5-11 ¾.

Northrup said Brown has a chance to move up in the final standings because the three remaining events are regarded as his best. They are the high hurdles, pole vault and 1,000 meters

The Eagles had a big setback before the meet started with all four of their qualifiers in the weight throw–three men and a woman–fell ill and could not compete.

Saturday’s events will include two of the Eagles’ strongest, the long and high jumps.

Marvel Stars In CSC Sweep Of Softball Home Openers

The Chadron State College softball team got in the winning column on Friday, winning two nip-and-tuck contests against the University of Colorado Colorado Springs in the opening day of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play.

The Eagles took nine innings to outlast the Mountain Lions in game one, winning 8-7. Game two was called to a halt due to encroaching darkness at 5:30 p.m., with CSC ahead 7-4.

Sophomore Bailey Marvel starred for the Eagles, batting 4-for-7 in two games, with a home run and five runs scored, to go with five stolen bases in as many attempts.

Marvel’s homer opened up the bottom of the first for CSC, before an Ellie Owens single brought in Bailey Rominger from second to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead.

Chadron State broke its lead open to 5-0 by the fourth. Sloane Quijas laced an opposite-field RBI single through the right side in the second. Later, in the fourth inning, Quijas hit a two-RBI double.

The game tightened in the sixth, when UCCS strung together 6 of its 10 hits to put five runs of its own on the board. The Mountain Lions batted through the order with five singles and one double, but left runners on the corners while tying the game 5-5.

Things remained knotted through two and a half innings until a pair of singles and a sac fly gave the Mountain Lions the edge at 7-5 in the top of the ninth.

The Eagles mustered just enough offense to respond with a rally in the bottom of the inning. Rominger singled to lead off, and her pinch-runner, Ali Conder, advanced to second on a wild pitch. Rominger later scored on a throwing error by the UCCS third baseman, and an Allie Mason double put Addison Spears and Alyx Gragg across for the game-winning runs.

Gabby Russell, in relief of starter Tia Kohl, earned the win for the Eagles to start the season 1-0.

The late game did not start until after 3:30 p.m., but it got off to a fast start with CSC receiving three bases on balls and two base hits to jump out to a 3-0 lead in the first. Gragg put the Eagles on the board with an RBI single, and Spears added a two-RBI double.

Marvel scored her fifth run of the day, following her fourth stolen base, when Quijas grounded out in the second inning.

In one swing, UCCS’ freshman catcher Brianna Santos erased the Mountain Lions’ deficit with a grand slam in the top of the fourth.

Likewise, CSC’s Ellie Owens put one over the left field wall to lead off the fourth, putting the Eagles back in control at 5-4.

Owens padded the Eagles’ lead in the fifth when she put a two-RBI single through the right side.

Winning pitcher Peyton Propp (1-2) struck out two in the sixth inning, to total five in the game, before the umpire declared the game environment no longer fit to play.

The two head coaches initially agreed to resume play in the bottom of the sixth on Saturday morning, but they were overruled later by RMAC office representatives, who awarded CSC the win based on the completion of more than four innings.

Lexi Rayburn of UCCS fell to 1-1 on the season, while the team went to 1-5 (0-2 RMAC).

CSC improved to 2-4 (2-0 RMAC).
