You can add the nation’s blood supply to the list of things affected by last week’s extreme winter weather.

The American Red Cross says weather forced the cancellation of hundreds of blood drives across 30 states and caused more than 15,000 donations to go uncollected.

Regional Communications Manager Emily Holley says cancellations outside of Nebraska can still affect access to blood in the state.

“We can keep blood on the shelves for about 45 days," Holley said. "We are continuously needing to replenish that supply because it’s going where it needs to go to do the most good.”

In response to the shortage, the Red Cross helped organize dozens of blood drives across the state over the next two weeks.

Holley says it’s important to make sure the blood supply stays healthy.

“This is a critical service that we provide," Holley said. "Come rain, snow, derechos, tornadoes, we always have to have that healthy blood supply no matter what happens.”

If you want, the Red Cross will test your blood for COVID-19 antibodies. The service is free and results are expected about a week after the donation.
