NORFOLK, Neb. - Despite the pandemic’s toll on small businesses, some shops in Nebraska are making it work, all thanks to the holidays.

The owner of Sweet Creations in Columbus is fulfilling her Valentine's Day orders in the comfort of her own home.

Anderson said her favorite thing about it is: "Getting to make the stuff for the people that they can enjoy to eat. I just love making people happy with sweets."

Anderson said things never really slowed down during the pandemic, and people shopping local helped her business survive.

"I appreciate it when they support the small businesses," Anderson said.

Although sweet treats are a hit during the holidays, a Valentine's Day staple says business is also blooming.

"Everybody from all over the United States is saying that they're even busier this year, and they credit it to the pandemic," said Mckayla Schroeder owner of Handties Floral in Norfolk. "More people are wanting to send flowers to their loved ones because they're not able to see them. It's just a nice gesture."

Schroeder started the business back in August and despite her shop’s pandemic debut, she was able to adapt.

Store owners are happy to rack up orders for holidays like Valentine's Day, but they say the real treat is getting to share their work.

"I just appreciate it so much because I put so much time and energy into my craft," Schroeder said. "This is my whole life. I love doing flowers. So it warms my heart that people want my work."
