FAIRBURY, NE —  Two more people know their jail sentences for their convictions related to a 2019 murder, finishing the court proceedings for the five people accused in the case.

Jefferson County District Judge Vicky Johnson sentenced 24-year-old Trey Saathoff of Diller to three years for attempted accessory to murder. He was given credit for 522 days served. Saathoff also faces a Colorado warrant and is expected to be extradited there after he completes his Nebraska sentence.

Johnson sentenced 22-year-old Caitlyn Grable of Texas to 8-12 years for accessory to murder. She gets credit for 551 days served.

The case stems from a July 1, 2019 shooting at Crystal Springs Park near Fairbury. 26-year-old Jerry Gilbert of Texas admitted to shooting and killing Lincoln resident Marc Jarrell. On Tuesday, Gilbert was sentenced to 45-60 years for second-degree murder.

All five people accused in the case avoided trial by reaching plea deals, so specific details of the case aren’t completely clear. Johnson gave additional information during Thursday’s hearings, calling it a case of mistaken identity.

Johnson says the situation started as a dispute over a vehicle. Grable, Gilbert’s girlfriend, developed a rouse to lure Saathoff to Jefferson County for a drug deal but intended to discuss the vehicle. There was concern that Saathoff’s passenger could be a Lincoln drug dealer with a dangerous reputation. The judge said Saathoff was supposed to signal to Gilbert if the passenger was safe and not the dealer. He failed to signal that Jarrell was not a threat. Gilbert shot Jarrell and discarded his body in a ditch several miles south of the scene. After being arrested six days later, Gilbert led police to the body.

Two prosecutors for three of the cases described it as a “senseless killing” and said the series of plea deals and sentences were attempts to make sense of it. Johnson said the killing was the result of a series of “stupid decisions.” On Thursday, she said Saathoff was more intimately involved in the murder than his sentence reflected. She sentenced him to the maximum allowed for the offense. Johnson exceeded the prosecution’s recommended sentence of 4-8 years for Grable.

22-year-old Logan Evans of Beatrice was in the vehicle with Saathoff and Jarrell. He was sentenced in December to three years in prison for attempted accessory to murder.

20-year-old Realidy Schram of Fairbury arrived at the scene with Gilbert and Grable. She was sentenced in June to two years of probation for obstructing government operations.
