LINCOLN, Neb. -- Head down Carson Road in Lincoln with your radio tuned to 96.5, and you may get a special surprise. It’s not just any old set of Christmas lights. It’s a glowing tribute to Rick Dietze’s favorite Christmas film, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.

“Just a huge fan,” Dietz said, standing feet away from a robe-clad mannequin depicting Randy Quaid’s character from the movie. “Growing up, I pretty much watched it multiple times a year.”

What began as just a batch of lights on his home has morphed into depictions of individual scenes from the film.

“I like to tinker around with things, like to see how things work,” Dietz said. “I love Christmas lights, so this was right up my alley, I guess.”

Dietz said interest in movie tribute has been growing every year, and this year he decided to funnel that interest toward a good cause.

Barrels for clothing donations line the road outside his house, and he’s already had to empty them out several times.

“Whatever we can do to give back to Lincoln, we’re more than happy to do,” Dietz said.

You can enjoy scenes from the holiday comedy and donate clothes until January 1.

“I’ve got friends and family, and even neighbors, that are always giving ideas for next year,” Dietz said. “We’ve got a couple of good ones in mind. Certainly can’t give it away yet, but stay tuned.”
