SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. (KNEP) - COVID-19 is affecting our communities especially colleges like Eastern Wyoming College. The pandemic has touched teachers and classes have been altered.

“We’ve had a few staff that have been that have tested positive for COVID and some have been quarantined they have stayed away,” says Kwin Wilkes Vice President of Administrative Service Eastern Wyoming College (EWC). “It really hasn’t affected our operations and our programs have not been affected. We have had some classes go online.”

EWC says the top priority is keeping students safe while they get their education. Some of the classes have been able to meet face to face.

“Under the circumstances we felt like we needed to close for safety,” says Wilkes. “They have had to go online and that’s the biggest change and obviously in classrooms they’ve been social distancing wearing masks that’s a change for them as well.”

“We have worked really hard to communicate well about the changes and different things going on so that they are aware and not have some hesitancy based on lack of knowledge, says Wilkes. “We have tried to be open and up front transparent on how we approach them and the programs and how we were dealing with the COVID overall. I think we have done a good job with that.”

EWC says the pandemic has not thwarted their recruiting efforts and students still inquire about the college.

“We are really a regional type situation within Nebraska and this area we recruit hard in this area,” says Wilkes. “So this COVID hasn’t affected that very much because we get the same kind of kids and we’re grateful to have those kids come and look at us.”

EWC says they have enhanced cleaning and social distancing measures to keep the college safe for their students and staff.
