In Platte County, a handful of new job openings highlight a widening divide between eligible candidates and the need of the county.

The Platte County Sheriff's office is currently recruiting for on-the-road deputies as well as male and female correctional facility officers.

Just last week, the Polk County Sheriff's office had an open dispatch position for months but received no applications.

Sheriff Ed Wemhoff of Platte County says recruitment for law enforcement has proved difficult statewide in recent years.

"It's a noble profession. It's a profession where you can make a difference," said Wemhoff. "I don't want to say people don't have a desire to serve other people, but they may choose to do it in other forms or fashions, where law enforcement is maybe not as prevalent as an option as it used to be."

Wemhoff says he feels blessed for the opportunity to serve, and be close with, the community.

The department will be accepting applications until January 8th.
