Firefighters and equipment from six departments were sent to battle a hay shed fire Tuesday morning, about six miles west of Beatrice.

The fire broke out after 9:00 a.m. on the Dan and Lori Crawford farm along Southwest 131st Road.

Beatrice Rural Fire and Plymouth Volunteer Firefighters initially responded to the fire in a storage structure that contained large round bales.

Firefighters set up a temporary water storage tank and summoned mutual aid for water supply from Diller, Dewitt, Odell and Pickrell departments.

Other structures just to the north and east of the hay shed did not appear to be damaged.

A new metal building the family constructed as a combination youth basketball facility and storage building was some distance south of the fire and was not damaged by the blaze.

Equipment was used at the scene to pull some of the burning bales apart to aid in putting out the fire.

No word yet on the cause of the fire.
