Bobcat Bowlers Compete in Jayhawk Challenge

Competing in the just their second tournament, the Peru State bowlers showed some improvement

(Peru, Neb.) – Competing in the just their second tournament, the Peru State bowlers showed some improvement as they took part in the Jayhawk Collegiate Challenge in Lawrence, Kan.
 
The tournament, hosted by Baker University, was held on Halloween and November 1.
 
The Bobcats bowled in mixed doubles due to not having enough female bowlers so both teams competed in the men's division.
 
In the varsity competition, Peru State finished sixth of seven teams while the junior varsity was sixth of six teams.
 
Varsity Team
 
William Penn (Iowa) led after Saturday's six-game set of bowling and also won the Baker style format. The Statesmen had a total pin count of 9,036. The other placings were: second – Baker (Kan.) – 8,855, third – Grand View (Iowa) – 8,663, fourth – Ottawa (Kan.) – 8,428, fifth – Morningside (Iowa) – 8,359, sixth – Peru State – 7,422, and seventh – Culver-Stockton (Mo.) – 5,388.
 
The varsity team in the total pins bowling sandwiched their best team totals in games one and six on the bowling on Saturday. In their first game, the team rolled an 842 and then finished the day almost 100 pins better at 941.
 
Theodore Straube (Lincoln) again led the bowlers as he averaged a 174.33 over six games which placed him 21st in the men's varsity division. Straube's best game was his last which was a 190.
 
Mike Anderson (Cairo) finished in 28th after shooting a total of 987 over six games for a 164.5 average. His best game was his last which was a 209.
 
Alexxander Uecker (Hastings) finished 31st with a 978 total over six games for a 163 average. Uecker was really consistent with a 176 being his best game.
 
Kassidy Haberman (Sioux Falls, S.D.) was 35th with a 962 over six games for a 160.33 average. Haberman had Peru State's best game as she rolled a 212 to start the competition.
 
McKinley Cross (Buhler, Kan.) was 42nd with a 918 over six games while averaging a 153. Cross's best game was her last where she rolled a 188.
 
The varsity then rolled 16 Baker games for a total of 2,531 pins. They had two games above 200 – game 12 was 201 and their last game was a 203.
 
Junior Varsity Team
 
The William Penn junior varsity team won their tournament finishing with a total of 8,156 pins. The other placings were second – Grand View – 7,962, third – Baker – 7,799, fourth – Morningside – 7,617, fifth – Ottawa – 7,475, and sixth – Peru State – 6,098. 

 
Mason Clobes (Seward/Gretna) bowled considerably better than in his first collegiate meet as he was technically Peru State's second-best bowler. Clobes finished 27th in the men's division with a total of 988 pins over six games for a 164.667 average. Consistency was Clobes' key as his high game was a 189.
 
Gavin Maas (Glenwood, Iowa) was 55th as he rolled 713 in five games for a 142.6 average. Maas's best game was a 157.
 
Alex Chmelka (Lincoln) was 64th with a 626 pin total in five games for a 125.2 average. Chmelka's best game was a 155.
 
Austin Guhde-Egger (Auburn) finished 66th with a total of 578 in five games while averaging 115.6. Guhde-Egger's best game was a 126.
 
Alena Montoya (Lakewood, Colo.) finished 69th with a total of 541 in five games averaging 108.2 per contest. Montoya's top game was a 129.
 
Alyiah Franco (Syracuse, Utah) was 71st with a 492 total in four games and averaged a 123 per game. Franco started the tournament with a 156 game.
 
Upcoming Tournament
 
Peru State will be competing in the Bronco Open hosted by Hastings College on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 14 and 15.
 
They will then have a break until January due to the Covid-19 challenges as many tournaments have been cancelled.
