Winter weather snow breaks a record in Norfolk

The previous record was set in 1997. A sudden burst of winter weather frost crushed that record for the town.

"Well, we got a saying here in Nebraska. 'If you don't like that weather, just wait a minute.' It will change!" said Norfolk resident Brandon Miller, out shoveling snow in front of his house.

And change it has. One minute it’s 86 degrees of sunshine and the next its frigid nights.

And now, it’s record-breaking snowfall for this time of year in Norfolk

A little inconvenient for some, but it’s a special treat for others- Like Miller’s little buddy Mack.

"He's six weeks old," Miller said of his puppy labrador playing in the snow. "It's probably his first snow he's ever seen in his whole life."

The previous record was 2.7 inches in 1997. Almost two decades later, it’s hit 3.5 point inches today.

It’s a little early for snow, but the winter storms heading into central Nebraska brought with it a burst of frost for the Northeast.

Of course, with frosty precipitation comes slippery conditions.

While it’s fun to slide around in a sled on a hill, it’s a little bit less fun to slip around in your car on the street.

Luckily, collisions have been minimal so far in Norfolk-

"In a Sunday afternoon, traffic will tend to pick up a little bit," said Norfolk Police Division Sergeant James Kelley. "But so far we've been pretty fortunate without having too many accidents."

As traffic picks up, being aware of the danger zones becomes even more important-

"The more well-traveled roads, the snow tends to get packed down and it creates slick situations," Kelley said.

"Do be aware if it's well-traveled. It can tend to get slick at intersections, stoplights, and stop signs."

The snow will persist today and tonight, before finally breaking up on Monday.
