Man in custody after Thursday night shooting in rural Columbus

One dead and another injured as Platte County Sheriff's Office investigates.

A Thursday night shooting in rural Columbus left one person dead and another injured, according to a release from the Platte County Sheriff’s Office. The suspect, 62-year-old Bryce Kummer of rural Columbus, turned himself over to deputies on site.

Authorities responded to the scene shortly after 7:00 p.m., where they discovered Esther Kummer, 90, had died from gunshot wounds. An injured adult male was also found on site. He was taken to the Columbus Community Hospital before being transferred to the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, where is in critical condition.

Bryce Kummer was placed under arrest and transported to the Platte County Detention Facility where he was charged with second degree murder, attempted second degree murder and use of a deadly weapon to commit a felony. He remains in police custody.
