FALLS CITY, NE — Two of Class D-2s most prolific programs will clash tonight at historic Jug Brown Field.

The Falls City Sacred Heart Irish host the Bruning-Davenport/Shickley Eagles in an early-season battle of undefeated teams.  The squads have combined for four titles in the last seven years.  You have to go back to before the current players were born to find a time one of the programs missed the playoffs.

Irish Head Coach Doug Goltz says this matchups gets his team’s attention.

“They all know about BDS," Goltz said. "Year in, year out, they’re a top five team similar to us.”

BDS Co-Head Coach Chris Ardissono says coaching against Goltz will help him learn about his own team.

“If we have a weak spot, he know where it’s at," Ardissono said. "If we’re weak somewhere, he will figure that out and he will take advantage of it. We’ll come away from this game knowing where we need to improve.”

Ardissono says he’s been impressed with his side in their two blowout wins to start the season.

“We haven’t had any turnovers, there’s one thing," Ardissono said. "Our kids effort out there (has been good)… I think we’ve controlled the line of scrimmage.”

Goltz is also high on his team’s performance. Senior Del Casteel is a veteran playmaker who leads the team in rushing yards and is tied for the team lead in tackles.

“He’s real physical and he’s very intense," Goltz said. "I think, more than anything, he’s a football player.”

The two giants in Class D-2 face off for the first time since the 2017 playoffs tonight at 7:00. Pregame coverage starts at 6:40 on Ol’ Red 99-5.
