COLUMBUS - Some Columbus residents saw a town relic torn down Wednesday.
Demolition began on the old fire department building at 14th Street and 26th Avenue.
Firefighters moved into a brand new building near 46th Avenue and Howard Boulevard earlier this year, but Assistant Chief Patrick Miller said. it was still a little tough to watch the old one go.
“Kind of special here, we’ve been here a long time and we really hate to see it come down like this, but it was time," Miller said. "Our new station is awesome. We needed it, you know, the equipment that we’re buying. We’re too big for this station.”
Columbus firefighters said the old station was built in the 1930s.
They said the new building includes more space for crews to work on their vehicles, as well as, several areas for personal hygiene to help keep crew members safe from the carcinogens that they often encounter when responding to fires.
