FAIRBURY, NE — A southeast Nebraska man could face up to three years in prison after reaching a plea deal.

24-year-old Trey Saathoff of Diller pleaded no contest to attempt of a class 2A felony on Thursday. The original charge was accessory to a class one felony. The plea agreement says Saathoff must testify on behalf of the State against Jerry Gilbert and that sentencing will be delayed until after Gilbert’s trial.

The charges stem from the shooting death of Marc Jarrell in July 2019. Authorities say the shooting happened at Crystal Springs Park in Fairbury. Five people have been charged in connection to the incident. Gilbert faces the heaviest charges, including second-degree murder. His jury trial is scheduled to start December 8.

Saathoff’s sentencing is set for January 7. He faces a maximum of three years in prison, 18 months probation and a $10,000 fine.
