OMAHA, NE - An Omaha school official is casting doubt on the possibility of a high school fall sports season.

The Omaha Public Schools Board met this week and discussed COVID-19’s effect on the fall semester. President Marque Snow said the district’s first priority is educating kids in a safe environment and that sports will come later.

“I think that a lot of people focus too much on sports,” Snow said. “It’s a shame that we don’t have leaders in the state to just step and say no fall sports.”

Snow’s comments came after a presentation from Supervisor of Athletics Steve Eubanks. He says there have been students participating in summer workouts who have tested positive for COVID-19. He says the district will have a detailed announcement about athletics and activities on August 3rd.

"There's great benefit to extracurricular activities," Eubanks said. "But I think that we need the time to truly look at the health, safety and well-being of all of our student-athletes and coaches."

The discussion is not limited to Omaha. The Virginia High School League announced Wednesday that it's considering three options for fall sports, none of which include football.

The National Federation of State High School Associations also issued a statement Wednesday. It says - quote - "the resumption of in-person classes, sports and other activities is crucial to the growth, development, and mental and emotional wellness of our nation’s youth.”

The N-F-H-S says eight states have pushed back the start of the fall season.

Nebraska School Activities Association Executive Director Jay Bellar told NCN recently that the NSAA has multiple contingency plans ready for the fall but is hoping for a full season for all sports.
