NORTH PLATTE - This year’s Independence Day is very special for one Ogallala man. Over nine decades ago Bernard Reiselman was born and is now celebrating his 95th trip around the sun, with two kids and three grandchildren.

“Probably the years that I was married to my wife were probably some of the best, and of course my two kids,” Reiselman said.

He was born on July 4th in 1925. He served in World War II says his secret to living a good, long life is having a sense of humor and keeping his mind active.

“When my wife is all, I’ve used to go places and travel a lot. Both of us enjoyed that, and I had some hobbies. I loved to do wood work so I did that quite a bit and I also like to golf, even though I wasn’t a professional golfer, " Reiselman said. “I still liked to play golf and years ago -- used to have a hobby, I did cross stitch, my wife started me doing that, she says, ‘You look like you need something to do,' so I’ve done a lot of cross stitch.”

As for having his birthday on Independence Day, he said it was great because everybody celebrated with him.

“When I was a kid I would always save my pennies so I can go by fire crackers for the Fourth of July. I always managed to have some fire crackers,” Reiselman said.

Throughout the whole interview, he was cracking jokes and making everyone laugh.

“You’ve got to have a sense of humor, that’s the only thing keeps you going in life a good sense of humor,” Reiselman said.

Reiselman’s family hosted a drive by honking parade Saturday morning to him as well.
