NORFOLK - A northeast Nebraska waterpark will open later this month.

The Norfolk City Council voted Monday to pass a motion to open the AquaVenture Waterpark on June 22nd.

Because of concerns due to the coronavirus, the opening might look different than before.

In a plan presented to the City Council, new procedures could include having two swimming sessions with an hour for cleaning in between, providing a name and phone number before being admitted, and having staff members enforce social distancing guidelines.

Norfolk Mayor Josh Moenning says the risk and difficulty of opening are outweighed by providing a good quality of life for the city's residents.

"I think it's very important that as we gradually reopen and reengage in community life, we wanted to make this quality of life benefit open to our citizens in a safe and responsible way," Moenning says.

According to city documents, the opening will create a deficit of around $230,000, but city officials say it could be made up of cash reserves.

Moenning says the city needed to provide this service to the community.
