GRAND ISLAND - J.C. Penney has released a list of stores that will be closing for good, and so far, only one Nebraska location is set to meet its demise.

The company has announced plans to close 242 locations across the country as it tries to stabilize its finances under Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

On Thursday, the company listed the first 154 locations that will be closing, with Grand Island's J.C. Penney being the only Nebraska store on the list.

About 100 stores that haven't been named will still be closing, while roughly 600 stores are safe from liquidation.
