OMAHA - Hundreds of people in Omaha lined the intersection of 72nd and Dodge streets Friday to protest the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

People began gathering in the area around 6 PM, and crowds had flooded out into the street by 8 PM. Omaha Police gathered as well to contain the protesters, with smoke cans being deployed to move the crowd off of the street.

Just before 10:30 PM the Omaha Police Department sent posted on Twitter that the protest is no longer peaceful, and arrests have been and will continue to be made for those who break the law. The OPD is asking everyone to stay clear of the area of 72nd and Dodge Street.

Similar protests have been taking place across the country after video surfaced on Monday of fired Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin kneeling on the neck of George Floyd. Floyd died in the process of being arrested, and Chauvin was arrested and charged with third degree murder and second-degree manslaughter on Friday.
