MAXWELL, Neb. (KNOP)- While flyovers and tributes were postponed, friends and family still paid their respect to family members who lay to rest at Fort McPherson.

Flowers, notes and other objects were left at tombstones on Monday at Fort McPherson cemetery in honor of Memorial Day. One Broken Bow resident left his dad something a little different, a six pack of beer and a lit cigar.

"He loved being a marine," Butch Faulkenberry said of his dad, who passed away in 2004. Faulkenberry went on to say his dad enjoyed beer and cigars with friends. "He always had a beer, and smoked cigars like he was eating carrots or something."

Fort McPherson is normally covered with American flags on Memorial Day, but due to health restrictions, that was not able to happen this year. Over 12,000 American flags were placed in a lot near the Platte River Mall, to commemorate what would have been at the cemetery.
