With so many mailing in their ballots early this election cycle, local polling booths in Norfolk are running a little light this year.

With the reduction in volume, polling centers are taking the chance to get some training in.

“I was surprised not to see the old people that are usually volunteering. There are some fresh young faces in there volunteering," said Mike Strance after visiting the Norfolk Public Library to cast his ballot.

“You’re in a room of first-time volunteers. So none of us have done this before, so we didn’t know what to expect," said Jason Doele, who was volunteering at the library's booths.

The team managing the polling booths at the public library may be new, but they’re receiving ample support.

“They’re great in Madison County at the office, they’re asking our calls when we have questions. Very Receptive," Doele said.

“It’s a very slow pace and low key, but easy.”

At St. John’s Lutheran Church, the polling personnel have veterans and first-timers working together. The headcount for voters is a fraction of what it was before.

“Normally our precinct does about 800, and right now we’re sitting at 78," says Cheryl Baumann, messenger and clerk for district 2-1 in Norfolk.

Cheryl says the slower pace makes her confident that the new volunteers will be well prepared for the regular polling seasons-

“When we go back to the normal and have our 800, it will be an easy transition.”

A few folks who came out to the polling booths have felt positively about how the teams are keeping things safe and effective.

“Every precaution is being taken to keep everyone safe," said Tina Trance after casting her ballot. "So, if you never got your mail-in, come out and vote because there is no reason not to. It’s important.
