NORFOLK, NE — A northeast Nebraska school district is stopping new activities a week early to give staff more time to prepare for the fall.

Norfolk Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Jami Jo Thompson announced Monday night that Thursday will be the last day of new enrichment learning activities for students. Students will still be allowed to reassess and complete previously assigned work through May 21.

Thompson says Nebraska Education Commissioner Matt Blomstedt told school leadership to prepare for the possibility of continued remote education in the fall. That prompted the District to dedicate the extra week to planning fall remote classes.

"We hope that this is not necessary, but want to be prepared to best serve our students if it becomes a reality," Thompson said.

Thompson says she is proud of how staff, students, families, and the community came together to finish the academic year.
