SIDNEY, NE - The city of Sidney recently received approval for a six-figure grant to help with restoration and renovation work at the Sidney Elks Lodge.

City Economic Development Director Melissa Norgard says the grant is worth $415,000. The grant is called a Community Block Grant and is applications are done through the State Economic Development office.

"This grant is really focused on how can we bring people to the area, how can we hold events there, how can we get people engaged in the community and really make this a focal community gathering space," Norgard told News Channel Nebraska in January.

25 percent of the grant amount must be matched by the city through dollar amount or through volunteer time.

The city will use some of its LB 840 funds and Elks' members volunteer time to get to the amount needed to reach the 25 percent match of the grant.

The Elks Lodge is a historic building in downtown Sidney. It has played host to several events over the last century, including an Elvis concert and golden gloves boxing matches.

It also at one point held city offices and city jail.
