Kimball upsets Morrill in subdistrict tournament; meets Bridgeport on Thursday

Longhorns, Bulldogs to play for Class C2-12 Subdistrict Championship on Thursday in Gering

GERING - Senior Brendan Walker hit four three-pointers and scored a game-high 22 points, and the No. 3 seed Kimball boys basketball team upset No. 2 Morrill, 57-41, Tuesday night in the Class C2-12 Subdistrict Tournament at Gering High School.

The Longhorns built a 28-17 halftime lead. The Lions trimmed the deficit to eight, but wouldn't get any closer in their first loss to Kimball this season. All 15 of their points in the third quarter came via three pointers, including three from junior Kolten McMackin. He finished with a team-high 20 points and six three-pointers.

Morrill finishes the season with a 15-9 record. 

Senior Beau Hanks added 13 points for the Longhorns, who evened their record at 11-11 and will play top-seed Bridgeport in the subdistrict championship game on Thursday. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at the Holliday Families Dome in Gering. The game will be carried live on 98.7 FM and newschannelnebraska.com.

The Bulldogs (20-4) forced 31 turnovers, junior Luis Garza scored 22 points and Bridgeport walked away with a 63-34 victory over No. 5 Bayard.

Sophomore Braxten Swires chipped in 10 points for Bridgeport, who is ranked seventh in the latest News Channel Nebraska rankings.

Junior Daemon Avilez led the Tigers with 10 points. Bayard finishes the season at 11-13.
