COLUMBUS - On Wednesday, Columbus High School saw another of its senior athletes officially commit to a college.

This time it was football player Landon Thompson.

Why did Thompson pick the University of Nebraska-Kearney?  He said academics had something to do with it.

"That was a big part of it," Thompson said.  "I talked with the counselors and stuff there and they just really solidified…I want to be there.”

He said the fact that there are four former Discoverers playing in UNK's program also influenced his decision a little bit.

Columbus High football Coach Craig Williams said Thompson is a resilient football player.

“He battles through injuries and doesn’t ever make excuses," Williams said.  "He comes out every day and works as hard as he can.”

Being on an honor roll student, Thompson said he doesn't just have football ambitions for college.

“I want to get my four-year degree in biology with an emphasis on health sciences and then, hopefully later on, go to optometry school,” he said.
