KEARNEY - The case of Kearney man accused of threatening to kill his mother is going to trial court.

Matthew Honomichl, 24, is charged with two counts of terroristic threats, two counts of first degree false imprisonment, and one count of use of a weapon to commit a felony. He also faces misdemeanor obstructing a peace officer and criminal mischief charges.

He waived an evidence hearing in Buffalo County Court and a judge transferred the case to district court for possible trial. Honomichl's next court date is February 25.

If convicted on all charges, Honomichl could get up to 65 years in prison.

Court documents indicate that Honomichl's mother told police that he threatened to kill her with a knife on October 21, 2019, at an apartment on East 29th street. She also said he threatened to kill her with a hammer, and that he was not going to let her leave the apartment. She also told police that she and another woman were trapped in the basement for about 30 minutes.

When police arrived, Honomichl was gone. Court records show police were called to the scene again about an hour later and found Honomichl outside the building holding a knife to his own throat. Police demanded the man drop the knife, but he resisted.

Police said shortly thereafter he took off on foot for about a block and a half, leading officers to 31st Street and Avenue B. That's where officers fired bean bag rounds through a shotgun, eventually subduing Honomichl and arresting him without any injuries.

At the time police said they were investigating the possibility of mental illness since he reportedly threatened to kill himself.

Authorities said Honomichl also got into a fight with a deputy while in the Buffalo County jail and faces a felony charge of assault by a confined person. That case was also transferred to trial court.
