Around 800 acres of land in Nebraska are up for sale this Thursday and it's being done entirely on the internet.

BigIron Realty said several tracts of land are up for sale in Butler, Polk and Nance counties.

BigIron salesman Jim and John Stock said there's several advantages to hosting the auction online.

“We have found consistently that online auctions will bring more money and you will net more money in your pocket as a seller,” Jim said.

He said it also has a numbers advantage over the traditional in-person auctions.

“You might have 50, 60, maybe 75 people in a room," he said. "We’ve got literally tens of thousands of people watching any individual sale on any given day.”

BigIron said it's simple for anyone to join the 250,000 registered online bidders: By going to their website and participating there, or by downloading their mobile app. They said it's not a third-party app.

“It’s not some other company that we’re outsourcing these numbers to," John said. "It’s all in house. All these numbers are protected, we’re not selling these lists. People find comfort in that.”

BigIron said its first online land auction was in 2009, but that it picked up within the last four years mainly because of technology and people getting more comfortable with the internet.

They said overwhelmingly, buyers like it because they can bid while they go about their day and because it keeps them anonymous.

“If it’s your banker, your brother, your cousin, your neighbor — whoever the case may be — you can bid on that knowing that if you don’t end up with it, there’s no hard feelings in the community,” John said.

While they said some people are still reluctant to bid online, they said anyone is welcome to go to BigIron and watch the online sales.
