SHICKLEY - Bruning-Davenport/Shickley fans certainly remember what happened in the first round of the Class D1 playoffs last year.

No. 14 seed Osceola/High Plains came into Bruning and earned a stunning 34-22 upset over then No. 3 seed BDS.

In the first half, some Eagle fans may have been having flashbacks. No. 15 seed Guardian Angels Central Catholic (4-5) limited BDS to 69 yards in the first half, and took a 14-6 lead into the locker room.

By the end of the third quarter, BDS fans could breathe easy.

The No. 2 seed Eagles (9-0) scored 22 points in the third quarter and 36 unanswered in the second half to down Guardian Angels, 42-20, on Halloween night in Shickley.

BDS got the ball to start the game, but couldn't move it all that much. The Eagles' first three drives all ended in punt.

Guardian Angel's first drive resulted in points. Senior running back Noah Hass found the end zone from six yards out to put the Bluejays ahead 8-0 with 6:50 to go in the first.

Later, after BDS' third straight punt in the second quarter, Hass made BDS pay again - this time from 50 yards away to put GACC ahead 14-0 with 7:10 to go until halftime.

The Eagles responded on the ensuing drive. Junior Dalton Kleinschmidt punched it in from four yards out to get BDS on the board, 14-6, with 2:52 to go in the second quarter.

Guardian Angels got the ball back, and drove all the way down to the BDS 9 with 30 seconds left, but junior Cody Steffen threw an interception in the end zone on a halfback pass to halt the drive. Junior Hunter Cox made the pick for BDS.

The Bluejays, leading 14-6 at the break, got the ball to start the second half, but went three-and-out and punted for the first time.

BDS scored just four plays later when Kleinschmidt ran it in from 27 yards out. The two-point conversion tied the game at 14-14 with 8:23 left in the third.

From there, the game unraveled for Guardian Angels. After two more punts and two more turnovers, BDS ended up scoring on their first four drives of the second half to go up 34-14 with 11:24 left in the game.

Guardian Angels committed four total turnovers - two of those led to BDS touchdowns. They also committed seven penalties for 45 yards.

With 7:00 left to play, GACC finally forced BDS to punt, but Steffen fumbled the punt return and the Eagles took over at the Bluejays' 25-yard line with 6:58 to play.

On the very next play, Kleinschmidt ran it in for his fourth score of the night, putting BDS ahead 42-14. Kleinschmidt carried the ball 13 times for 102 yards and a season-high four touchdowns.

Junior quarterback Dominic Quinones was efficient through the air, completing 6-of-8 passes for 85 yards and two touchdowns.

Senior Dylan Domeier had an 11-yard touchdown catch in the third quarter, while senior Isaac Else had a TD grab from 35 yards out in the third quarter as well.

After gaining 167 yards of offense in the first half, the Bluejays were limited to roughly 55 yards in the second.

GACC kept the ball on the ground for the majority of the game. It caught BDS off guard early, but the Eagles clearly adjusted on defense in the second half.

Senior Noah Hass finished with 8 carries for 73 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Bluejays. Junior Cody Steffen ended up with 15 carries for 55 yards and a late touchdown in the final two minutes of the game. He also caught five passes for 65 yards.

BDS will stay home in the second round of the playoffs. They'll head to Bruning to host No. 7 Cross County on Wednesday at a time to be determined.

Cross County dominated No. 10 Laurel-Concord Coleridge Thursday, 60-26. BDS defeated the Cougars in Stromsburg on Oct. 18, 34-20.
