KEARNEY - Danie Parriott caught her breath after crossing the finish line at the Nebraska School Activities Association State Cross Country Championships at the Kearney Country Club in Kearney. The Conestoga sophomore then found her parents and coaches, ran over to them, gave them hugs and shed tears.

She was a state champion.

"It feels amazing," she said.

Parriott, who started running distance in the seventh grade, led the 5K course from start-to-finish with a 6:20 mile pace. She crossed the finish line in 19:40.5, 10 seconds better than Malcolm senior Logan Thomas.

"I got in front, so I could get a higher place and not get stuck in a pack," Parriott said. "I used every hill that I could to stay in the lead."

Parriott also runs distance for the Cougars track team.

Her teammate, senior Bella Hogue, finished in 36th pace.

Syracuse junior Ellie Wilkinson, who placed second at the state meet in 2017, finished in 14th place with a time of 20:35.1.

Boone Central / Newman Grove won the team title.
