Benson High School senior KeShon Henderson was well on his way to a college basketball career.

Two weeks ago, the point guard accepted a full ride scholarship to play basketball at Judson University in Elgin, Illinois. Henderson's mother says her son's life changed the night after he signed with Judson.

“I got a call that my son’s car was taped off, at about 9:30 p.m.,” Tina Henderson said. “I went to the scene and saw the car, but my son was not there.”

Nearly three hours after the shooting Henderson found out her son was in surgery. She says he‘d been robbed and shot several times near 42nd and Sprague streets.

"There was a bullet that went from the bottom of his lung into the leg. It was just one bullet that did that," Henderson said. "The other one went straight through each side."

Ultimately, doctors amputated the 17 year-old's leg. Henderson's mother says her son is in a coma due to complications.

"About four days in, they noticed that the leg was not getting any flow and circulation and it was discolored, the next day the leg lost its warmness and it became cold and they say it had to be amputated," Henderson said.

"This is a good kid, he did not deserve any of this," said KeShon's aunt, Juarquate Brown. "He did not deserve any of this, you never would think it would happen to you. He always had a ball in his hand, so this one right here is really tough."

Henderson carries a slew of accolades, on the court and most importantly in the classroom. Several of his academic honor roll certificates sat on display Sunday in his mother's living room, in addition to his athletic awards.

"I just never thought [KeShon], he's one of the kids where you don't have to correct a lot," said his mother. "He's not a kid that's in the streets at all, his whole life was basketball."

Now, KeShon's classmates, teachers and coaches are covering him with prayers and love, while his family fights to stay strong.

"If I'm always weak, I cant give him any strength when I go in there to the side of his bed to talk to him," Henderson said. "So I'm trying to remain hopeful."

Henderson says the suspects who robbed and shot her son have been arrested. Early Monday morning, Omaha police confirmed there has been at least one arrest in the case. Officers intend to send out a news release with more information later Monday.
