CRESTON - A Nebraska dairy farm is showcasing its innovative technology to fellow farmers across the state.

Larson Farms held an open house Sunday afternoon at their robotic dairy farm near Creston. The facility is one of just a few fully automated dairy farms in Nebraska, and Bob Larson says there's a different mentality to running a farm with a variety of different technology.

"We are one of three robotic dairys in the state, and we've been operating for about a year-and-a-half," Larson said. "On a parlor you push the cows up and the milkers are attached, but in a robotic dairy the cows come up to the robot on their own free will, and we collect a lot of data while they're in there."

Larson says there are certain advantages which come with running a robotic dairy farm, including have the ability to provide effective care to each individual cow.

"We get that cow to be an individual cow in the box," Larson said. "We can get the data just off that individual cow, and we can also treat that cow individually, so based on how that cow produces we can give her more or less feed, so if they need more calories for the day, we can give that cow those calories based on how well she's doing."

Sunday's open house allowed Larson farms to showcase their operation to a number of area farmers. Bob Larson believes transparency is key when it comes to showing people where their dairy products come from.

"Our number one focus has been to get people out to see where their milk and food come from," Larson said. "There's getting to be more and more of a disconnect between the consumer and the dairy farmers, so we wanted to be here so people could ask us questions, and we can give you the honest answers without any misconceptions."
