Connor Pohlmeier sets new rushing mark at Plattsmouth High School
The senior running back broke the school record for rushing yards in a game, at 306, in the Blue Devils win over Crete.
PLATTSMOUTH - It's been four years since the Plattsmouth football team had 400 yards of total offense in one game. They had 428 yards rushing alone in their victory over Crete last Friday, 41-15. They finished with 495 total yards.
The Blue Devils were led by senior running back Connor Pohlmeier, who finished with a school-record 306 rushing yards on 32 carries. He averaged 9.6 yards per carry and scored two touchdowns.
Pohlmeier broke the school record for rushing yards in a game previously held by Tony Wilson, who set the mark in 2002 at 303 yards. Wilson went onto have a decorated four-year career at the University of Nebraska-Kearney.
Plattsmouth Head Coach Bob Dzuris says the younger running backs on the depth chart are going to be better in the coming years just because they're watching Pohlmeier. He says Pohlmeier has vision that's hard to imagine in a running back.
"He only weighs 137 pounds, so he's got to be good," according to Dzuris. "He's got to read things right, he's got to get into seems and fall forward. If he doesn't read things right, he's not going to make these kind of plays. We have an inside zone play that he reads like a college player. When we put the ball to the perimeter (to the outside)...he sees a seem and he doesn't hesitate."
Pohlmeier has rushed for 474 total yards this season and has scored four times. As a team, the Blue Devils have rushed for 788 yards and average 262.7 yards per game.
Plattsmouth's rushing attack is anchored by an offensive that Dzuris says has been consistent through the first three games and has been the key to their 2-1 start.
"We knew we had skill-position players," Dzuris said. "When you have that, you still got to be able to move the ball. It just doesn't happen in good 11-man football with just throwing it or tossing it to somebody to make plays. You have to be able to sustain things up-front."
The Blue Devils are on the road Friday at No. 7 Mount Michael Benedictine. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. The Knights defeated the Blue Devils a year ago, 27-13.
