BROKEN BOW— A recall effort against Broken Bow Mayor Jonathan Berghorst has begun according to petition filer John Walters. Walters, filed the petition papers on August 30 asking for a recall of Mayor Berghorst for the following reasons:

1. Two charges filed against him by the Nebraska Attorney General.

2. Creating a hostile work environment.

3. Attempting to make monetary decisions and promise job contracts to friends without Council input and approval.

4. Shows no respect for department heads, and volunteer boards appointed to represent the city.

According to Custer County Attorney Steve Bowers, the petition request will be served to the Mayor where he will have an opportunity to file a 60 word defense statement. Following the defense statement, the Custer County Clerk will place the seal on the petition certifying the document.

According to Bowers, the circulator of the petition must collect 35% of the registered voters signatures in Broken Bow. Following the signing of the petition, the clerk must then verify the signatures and if the 35% of voters’ signatures is met, the recall vote will then be placed on the regular election ballot in November.

This is a continuing story. Updates will be posted when available.
