GRAND ISLAND - Grand Island's Waste Water Treatment Center is continuing to battle recent flood waters. With three times as much water as normal flowing through the pipes, the department is trying something new to prevent back up.

The GI Public Works department had to shut down a corner of town to add in an additional water pump.

Authorities closed off the intersection of Bass Road and Catfish Avenue to help move water through their pipes. This time of year they typically only have one running, but the additional pump brings it up to three that they're using right now.

Our news partners KSNB LOCAL FOUR report the pipes are seeing triple the amount of water they are used to. They typically run about 13 million gallons per day, but hit 37 on Wednesday.
