Landscaping Around Historic Auditorium, Trail Section is Next
Sprucing up, around a historic city auditorium
The Beatrice City Public Properties Department has added some new landscaping around the Beatrice Municipal Auditorium, to spruce up its look. The auditorium is a WPA Building on the National Register of Historic Places. The art-deco auditorium was built in 1939 and finished in 1940 during the era of the New Deal agencies. It now houses city offices, the fire and rescue department along with the Main Street Beatrice Office. It's auditorium gym floor is used for tournaments and recreational leagues.
Soon to be done is landscaping work on the Chief Standing Bear Trail from Second and Court, to the area of the former Dempster Industries plant along South Sixth. Area around the trail has been leveled in anticipation of the planting to be done.
A long-awaited trail project in the city is another step toward becoming reality. The Nebraska Department of Transportation plans to seek bids September 19th, for the Hannibal Park Trail.
Construction is expected starting next Spring. The trail would extend east of the Big Blue Water Park to near Beatrice High School, then north to Hannibal Park. Right-of-way acquisition has been nearly completed.
