A Pennsylvania man is on a special road trip coming straight through Nebraska…on a tractor.

Ivan Stoltfus’s dream of driving his tractor across the United States turned into a reality in 2014 when he first started traveling from state-to-state to raise money for Operation Second Chance, an organization dedicated to veterans.

"I was never in the military, and I realized I took my freedom for granted as I got older. I thought, I want to help somehow...and I see the pain that so many people struggle with from PTSD, and our first responders also, and I thought I needed to do my part."

The organization works to get veterans who are wounded or suffer from PTSD out of their homes and into a new environment, but the help goes beyond hosting events; they assist veteran's families financially as well.

The idea for the road trip was inspired by Stoltfus’s father who worked his way across America at a young age…

"I thought someday, I want to go across America, but I want to go for a cause, and then I saw so many of the veterans coming back trying to adjust back into life and really having a struggle, and this is one way that I can give."

The dashboard of his tractor is decorated with pictures of veterans to keep him motivated on his long adventure.

"Every morning, I come in and realize that somebody sacrificed for my freedom. A number of families gave me a picture of their loved ones, so I come in here, it's a humbling experience in the morning as I realize somebody paid the ultimate price so that I could be free."

Why a tractor? Some might wonder...

He says he not only loves the sound of the tractor’s engine, but it draws attention as he makes his sacrifice to drive across the country, and the camper acts as his billboard to bring awareness to the organization.

"I see America as one big family...and family members help each other. We have a responsibility for those that are willing to go out and sacrifice for my freedom."

Although he’s unsure if this will be his last time venturing through the States, Stoltfus knows that he will forever raise awareness for the cause…

"We're free because somebody was willing to pay the price for it. There's only one percent that's protecting the other 99 percent of this country, and we owe them something... we have a responsibility to help them when we can. This is my way of trying to bring awareness as I go down the road.

Stoltfus plans to end his journey in Sarasota, Florida around mid-October.
